The reasons why this version of Beneath all the Madness did not become what you heard when the album was released.

1. I was told by the mastering lab people at Atlantic Records Los Angeles based pressing plant that my 7-1/2 ips speed quarter track masters were not up to industry standards. The industry standard they said needed to be at 15 ips half track for the best sound.
2. Wall Of Voodoo wanted to borrow my Arp, Mini Moog and Oberheim synthesizers to record their first 12" single and album. Jim Hill their producer and engineer offered to give me free studio time to remix and master my multi track tapes if I let them use them.
3. Getting an offer like that and being able to use the famous Crystal Sound Studios in Hollywood for free was something only an idiot would turn down.
4. So I did, and the results to me upon the albums release was disappointing. Jim Hill did an excellent job, but the mastering lab at Atlantic Records didn't reproduce at all what the tapes sounded like. If you own the vinyl of Beneath, compare it to the version you hear in this Box Set. You'll hear the difference and then you'll know how that has always driven me crazy.
5. Combine all of the above reasons and you'll understand why I prefer to only listen to this version of Beneath all the Madness.
